The Sound or Feeling?
Marcell & the Truth’s sound is created to be more or a feeling than a sound. Marcell felt years ago that anyone can seemingly create a “sound” but few seemed to be able to create a feeling with their music. So he set out to find musicians that would think more like producers and song writers than just musicians playing cool notes.
Marcell’s joy’s is hearing, “that song feels like…” or “that takes me to a time when…” or “that reminds me of…” or “you guys sound like…”
That was part of his challenge in getting a major record deal. The labels would sometimes say, “we going to make you the next Luther Vandross!” or someone else. He also usually heard, “what you trying to be, Stevie Wonder or Ray Charles! Just stick to one style, one sound so we can market you easier. Just be Neo-Soul, Jazz, Gospel, Pop or something. People will never buy what you are doing”
But he knew the guys he loved brought the world together with their music, cats like Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Ray Charles, Duke Ellington, U2, Dave Matthews Band, or Phil Collins were universal with their music. Marcell wanted to be able to travel the world in his songs without ever leaving the song itself or an album. For instance:
In the song “Seed You Water” – Marcell hopes you hear or feel Africa at the root, but with South American rhythms, some Funk, some Rock and Roll with A Caribbean drive.
Or in the song “Greatest Love” - He would love if you felt the sensuality of South American love songs, the openness of jazz, the blues behind losing a love you toke for granted and that the same time, feeling sexy enough to search for a new love if you really had too.
The Variables is the music. The constants is The Voice, the melodies/choruses/hooks, and the lyrics ie “the message”
We can go on and on but he had to find the write kind of musicians to make this happen. It was difficult for him to create this only with producers. That’s what makes the Truth so special. Marcell feels he’s finally find a combination of teammates or a “band of musicians” that can create with him these ideas. For them this is just the beginning. They plan on bringing us great music for years, albums spanning the globe. Giving you so many different perspectives, topics, grooves, and vibes but without ever telling you, hoping just maybe you simply………feel it
